Products

Q: Are Enjoy Life products free-from common allergens?

A: You can eat with confidence, because all Enjoy Life products are free-from the eight most common food allergens in the United States, as declared by the FDA — wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish and shellfish. In addition, our products are made in our allergen-free facility, so there’s no chance of contamination. We also are free-from Canada’s twelve priority food allergens, which include the big eight plus sulfites, crustaceans, sesame and mustard.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products wheat free or gluten free?

A: Both! Enjoy Life products are made without wheat or any other source of gluten, such as barley or rye. Moreover, the dedicated gluten-free facility where we bake our goodies has been certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization. We require all ingredient suppliers to fill out non-contamination certificates, and we perform routine gluten rapid tests for extra assurance.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products nut-free?

A: Yes, our products are completely free-from nuts. No peanuts or tree nuts are ever used in Enjoy Life products — they don’t even enter our production facility! For extra security, we perform peanut rapid tests on both our raw ingredients and finished products to ensure the highest levels of safety and quality.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products dairy-free?

A: Absolutely! All of our products are dairy-free, including free-from dairy sugars (lactose) and dairy protein (casein). People with lactose or casein allergies/intolerances can enjoy our goodies without fear!

Q: Are Enjoy Life products lactose-free?

A: Yes, all of our products are lactose-free, meaning that they don’t contain any dairy sugars (lactose). They also are casein-free and don’t contain any dairy proteins.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products casein-free?

A: Yes, Enjoy Life products are casein-free. Our ingredients also are regularly tested for casein, so you can be certain that what you choose to consume truly is free-from all dairy sugars.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products sulfite-free?

A: Yes, all of our products are sulfite-free.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products egg-free?

A: Yes, all of our products are egg-free.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products corn-free?

A: Enjoy Life products are not corn-free, but some people still may be able to savor some of our foods.

The only Enjoy Life product line that uses corn or its derivatives as a direct ingredient is Plentils®, which contain maltodextrin. This affects only the Garlic & Parmesan, Dill & Sour Cream and Margherita Pizza flavors. The Sea Salt Plentils® do not contain corn or its derivatives.

Our other products do not contain corn as a direct ingredient, but some ingredients (including applesauce, brown rice flakes, brown rice syrup, chia flour, citric acid, cranberries, date paste, expeller-pressed vegetable oil, buckwheat flour, millet flour, freeze-dried raspberries and strawberries, lemon granules, malic acid, natural flavors, palm oil, maltodextrin, quinoa flakes, puffed amaranth, rice bran, rice crisps, roasted hulled pumpkin seeds, rosemary extract, sorghum flour, sunflower seed butter, vanilla, vegetable glycerin and xanthan gum) have corn present in the facility from which we purchase the ingredients.

Most corn-free people do not react to our products (with the exception of Plentils®), though some may. If you have a corn allergy, you should use your best judgment prior to consuming our products.

Q: Why are some SunButter® Crunch Bars green on the inside when they are still within their expiration date?

A: Sometimes SunButter® Crunch Baked Chewy Bars will develop a greenish hue on the inside of the bar because baked goods made with sunflower seed butter can turn green during the baking process. This is a natural phenomenon that occurs because of the chlorophyll in sunflowers and sunflower seeds. If the pH level of the product goes above a 6-7, the chlorophyll reacts, turning the product green. Cookies and other items that tend to use baking soda or baking powder in the formulation will tend to see a higher pH level, which intensifies the greening process. At first, the green can hardly be noticed, but after a few weeks the chemical reaction between the pH level and the chlorophyll is more complete and the green color could appear. We believe the levels of chlorophyll also could be affected by seasonal conditions, which is why the bars don’t turn green all the time.

Some people misconstrue the green color to be mold, but we have confirmed through testing that it is not mold and does not affect the safety or taste of SunButter® Crunch Soft Baked Chewy Bars. The product is completely safe to consume before the best-by date marked on the package.

Q: Do Enjoy Life products contain hydrogenated oils or trans fats?

A: No, we don’t use any hydrogenated oils in our goodies, so none of those pesky trans fats are in our delicious products. We opt to use healthier oils such as safflower and sunflower oil.

Q: Do Enjoy Life products contain GMOs?

A: Nope, and we like it that way. All Enjoy Life products are verified Non-GMO by the Non-GMO Project.

Q: What percentage of cacao is in your chocolate products?

The cacao percentage varies from product to product. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Ricemilk Crunch Chocolate = 35-40% cacao
  • Ricemilk Chocolate = 40-45% cacao
  • Dark Chocolate = 55-60% cacao
  • Mini Chips & Mega Chunks = 52-55% cacao
  • Dark Morsels = 69% cacao
Q: With so many common food allergens are left out, what’s actually in your products?

A: We have to get creative with our ingredients! Like other gluten-free and allergy-friendly foods, we use some rice products (rice flour, rice flakes, rice protein). But unlike many other gluten-free manufacturers, we also use nutrient- and flavor-rich grain alternatives like quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and sorghum flour. Instead of eggs, we use a combination of baking powder, flax and applesauce. Rather than saturated fats, we use non-hydrogenated, trans fat-free safflower oil. For sweeteners, we skip the refined stuff and use a combination of natural fruit juices and honey or pure brown cane sugar. We also bake with rosemary extract and a fruit juice/grain dextrin mixture to lock-in freshness and extend shelf life.

Q: How long will Enjoy Life products stay fresh?

A: If you keep them sealed, our products will stay fresh until the best-by date on the packaging. For a fresh-baked taste, try warming our bars and cookies in the microwave 8-10 seconds on high!

Q: Can I freeze Enjoy Life products? For how long?

A: Our products can be frozen, but they have a shelf life of five to six months, so freezing probably isn’t necessary. They’re too yummy to resist for long!

Q: Do Enjoy Life products contain gluten-free oats?

In the great “gluten debate,” oats are a controversial grain, once thought to be a substantial source of gluten. Recent research has suggested that oats do not contain the reactive peptide sequence known to be problematic for gluten intolerance. However, most oats in this country are grown, processed or stored near wheat and are thought to be contaminated at levels too high to be considered safe for people with celiac disease. Therefore, we have chosen not to include oats in our products at this time. Instead, we use rice flakes and other great grains that offer the similar great flavor and texture of oatmeal cookies — all without the oats.

Facility

Q: Where are Enjoy Life products manufactured?

A: Most Enjoy Life products are made at our company headquarters in Schiller Park, Illinois (just outside of Chicago). Our facility is certified gluten-free and dedicated nut-free. That’s where our company offices are too, so we’re often greeted with the delicious smell of cookies baking.

Q: Are all Enjoy Life products made in a dedicated nut-free facility?

A: Absolutely! We wouldn’t have it any other way!

Q: Are all Enjoy Life products made in a certified gluten-free facility?

A: Most of our products are made in a gluten-free facility certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization). Our cereals, Plentils®, baking chocolate, and chocolate bars are all manufactured in dedicated gluten-free facilities or dedicated gluten-free manufacturing lines.

Q: Are all of your products made in a dedicated dairy-free facility?

A: Most of our products are made in a dedicated dairy-free facility. Our baking chocolate and Plentils® are produced in a facility that also processes dairy; however, they are produced on a dedicated dairy-free line. All ingredients are additionally tested to ensure strict allergen control standards are met.

Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Living

Q: What is Celiac Disease? How is it diagnosed?

A: Celiac Disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by the intake of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. The only treatment for Celiac Disease is a strict gluten-free diet for life. Luckily there are now many tasty and nutritious gluten-free foods — like Enjoy Life products — that make it easier to eliminate gluten from one’s diet.

Once thought to be a rare disorder, Celiac Disease is known to affect as many as 1 in 133 Americans (1% of the population). Symptoms vary in nature (such as diarrhea, skin rashes and migraines) and severity. Gone untreated, Celiac Disease may result in osteoporosis, infertility and anemia. It also increases the likelihood of developing other autoimmune conditions and cancers of the gut.

Celiac Disease is the most under-diagnosed health condition today, often mislabeled as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, ulcers and anxiety disorder. It can be diagnosed through a blood test and biopsy of the small intestine. Talk to your primary care physician if you think you might have celiac disease. For more information, visit the resources section of our site for links to Celiac Disease organizations, support groups and research centers.

Q: What is gluten?

A: Gluten is the protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It is in most mainstream bakery items and prepared foods, including such unsuspecting items as soy sauce and licorice (both made with wheat). People with Celiac Disease and other forms of gluten intolerance must avoid foods that contain gluten, or they may suffer from short- and long-term health complications. Gluten is highly contaminating, so it’s important for people with related health conditions to eat foods that are tested for gluten content and proven to be gluten-free. It’s even better to eat food that is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility like ours for the highest confidence in its quality and safety.

Q: How can I tell what foods include gluten?

A: Gluten is the protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It is in most mainstream bakery items and prepared foods, including such unsuspecting items as soy sauce and licorice (both made with wheat). All Enjoy Life products are gluten-free and free-from the top eight food allergens, so they are safe to eat if you are following a gluten-free diet. Please remember that wheat-free does not necessarily mean gluten-free.

Q: Are Enjoy Life products wheat-free or gluten-free?

Q: What is a GF/CF diet?

A: A GF/CF diet is one that is free-from gluten and casein. Gluten is the protein that is found in wheat, barley and rye, while casein is the principal protein found in milk and other dairy products. All Enjoy Life products are gluten-free and casein-free, so they are suitable for a GF/CF diet.

When gluten and casein are eliminated from the diet, many parents of children living with Autism report an improvement in alertness, sensory perception, awareness of pain and overall behavior management. While there is limited scientific evidence to date, anecdotal evidence from many parents points to the benefits gained from following a GF/CF diet.

Food Allergies & Intolerances

Q: What are food allergies?

A: A food allergy occurs when the immune system produces an antibody in response to the protein in specific foods. Exposure to the food in even the tiniest amounts can produce symptoms either immediately or delayed, ranging from uncomfortable (hives, eczema, stomach upset, sinus problems) to life threatening (swelling of the tongue, closing of the throat). Food elimination diets, blood and/or lab tests are used as a part of the diagnosis.

Q: What are food intolerances?

Q: Food intolerance occurs when eating a certain food triggers a negative physiological response, but the immune system is not affected in the same way. Symptoms may take up to three days to kick in, making food intolerances very difficult to diagnose. Elimination diets and specialty tests are the most common methods for diagnosis. While not life-threatening, symptoms can be severe and range from gastrointestinal distress, headache and chronic fatigue.

Q: I think I might have a food allergy. How can I learn more?

A: Since we aren’t doctors, we cannot dispense medical advice. We recommend that you talk to your doctor. If you would like to do more research, there are great online resources listed in our resources section.

Additional Questions

Q: Can you send me samples or coupons?

A: We wish we could honor all requests for samples and coupons, as we know that it can be expensive to eat allergy-friendly and gluten-free foods. Unfortunately we have a limited number of samples and coupons that we can distribute throughout the year, so we can’t send coupons to everyone who requests them. You can, however, download and print our digital coupons any time. They are located on the bottom of every page on our website.

Q: I’m having trouble printing your downloadable coupons. Can you help?

A: Yes! Java (the software program that allows you to print coupons at home) often updates its software. We recommend you download the latest version and try again. If that still doesn’t work, email info@enjoylifefoods.com.

Q: Do you donate products and coupons to events?

A: Enjoy Life has always supported organizations that help people with special dietary needs. We occasionally donate products and coupons to events, but the decision is made on a case-by-case basis. To submit a proposal, complete our product donation form. While we cannot say yes to everyone, we promise that we will review your proposal and get back to you with a decision.
